Review Of Budget News
The Budget News is usenet service provider from Europe, based in the Militiareweg, Netherlands. Once you enter their website, you will notice its minimalistic design and the “no nonsense value for money use it!” slogan. You will also notice (probably) the only information the average user will want to see: retention of 40 days (both for the text and binary groups), 10 connections, uncapped speeds (the speed may vary during busy hours) and the completion time which is more than 99%.
Packages and pricing
There are only two options available:
- one month for 5 €
- one year for 25 €
Servers
The server address is news.budgetnews.net, available on the port 119.
Speed
As we have already mentioned, there are 10 connections available but the speed may fluctuate during busy hours. If the speed is too low regardless of the busy hours, they recommend the user to reset the modem and the check if all 10 connections are available. Further, the user should check the firewall settings and antivirus software which may slow the connection down. The speed problems is probably the result of only one server farm they have.
Misc
The “account sharing” is not supported. The SSL is not supported as well, although they say “not yet”. There is also connection speed test where a user can test the available download speed. The number of newsgroups available is not known.
Recommendation
Considering the very low retention times, speed issues and the price that is not competitive, we can hardly recommend using their services.
