Review Of Cheap Use.net
CheapUSE.NET promises to give the cheapest usenet access available anywhere. For start, they offer unlimited USENET access for only $7.99 per month.
Server information
The news server address is news.cheapuse.net, available on the US-based server farm and on the port 119. Maximum off 10 connections are available.
Retention and completion
400 days of binary and text retention are available and more than 99% of completion is available as well.
Pricing
Currently, there are two pricing plans:
- unlimited – 3 cents for the first 3 days
- unlimited – $7.99 a month
Here, the unlimited actually means that the user can download as much as he or she wants, but they ask for fairness where there should be no constant download of 50MB per second. Regarding the 1 cent trial, once the user signs up for this option and completes the billing through the PayPal, the amount of $0.01 is billed and the user will get 3-day access to the USENET service.
Speed
During the peak hours (6AM-6PM EST), the speed between 1 MB/s and 5 MB/s can be expected. On the other hand, the user can expect the speed of 30MB per second. Naturally, that depends on the Internet connection of particular user. Also, there is server speed test available; the 50MB file for testing purposes is provided.
Security
Currently, they don’t have SSL available because of the way there NNTP and server works, the use of current SSL libraries such as OpenSSL is not possible. The log of what the user downloads is not kept, although they collect the stats on the amount of data the user has downloaded.
Misc
Any newsreader that supports NNTP is recommended. Particularly, they recommend GrabIt for the beginners and Newsleecher for more advanced users. There is also link to the comprehensive list of available newsreaders. The posting is not yet enabled since their servers are not configured in that way. They are working on that, though, and will e-mail all the users once this option becomes available.
Recommendation
It is cheap provider and certainly worth looking, although we have seen the better retention times for this price.
