How To Install And Configure NBRemote, The New NewsBin Controller

We announced the coming out of the new remote control for your NewsBin Pro, NBRemote. But, in that article we didn’t have enough space to include instructions on how to configure the installation once you have it on your mobile device. In our announcement we gave you a few prerequisites, but just in case you missed them, here they are:

  • NewsBin Pro, at least version 6.11 or newer, but no free trials. Betas, and the RC releases will work, too.
  • Wifi access for both your mobile device, and the computer you want to control.

For most of us, this is already done. If you don’t have a fully functional and registered NewsBin Pro client, you will need to purchase a subscription to get the remote control functionality.

Prep Work

Getting the NBRemote up and running is easy, but there are a few things you will need to do first. Here they are:

  • Get And Set Up Information

Open your NewsBin Pro, now select “Options.”

  • From the options window, select Remote Control, then click the box to activate the remote control function.
  • Now you will need to create a password, and note the password along with the port you will be using, default is 118, but this can be changed.
  • Save all settings and close the window.
  • Click on the “Help” menu, then select the “About NewsBin Pro.”
  • Add the serial number to your other notes.
  • Find the IP address of the computer you want to control.

Note: To find the IP address of your computer, then open a command prompt window, and type in “ipconfig” (without the quotes.) Your IP address will be in the data and look something like:

Install And Configure

If you haven’t done it already it’s time to download the client for your mobile device. Once the installer is downloaded, go ahead and click on it and install the program using the defaults. Once it is installed, start the client, and you will get a screen like this:

Hit the OK button, then you will get the screen in Pic 2, so select the option “Add NewsBin Server.” The next screen (Pic 3) will allow you to enter all the information you have been noting. The “Description” can be anything to name the connection, then you must add in the IP address in the “Server Address” field, The port number should be port 118, unless you changed it, If this is the case then use the port you assigned to it, add the serial number of the NewsBin Pro install you will be controlling, and the password you made.

Test Your New Connection

At this point you can “Test The Connection.” You should get a notification saying that the client is connected. If you get a timeout error, then check the IP address you put in the mobile client, and if there is an “Authentication” error, then check your password. From here you can save all the settings, then proceed to put the skin on that you like, and any filters you may want in place. You can add another server by going back to the “Add New Server” and adding in any other IP addresses, etc. you may have. Now you are up-n-running…remotely. If you accidentally loose your remote, just call it!
