Review Of Newsreader.com
A veteran provider of the usenet access appeared for the first time in the year of 1996. Not far from the truth, they claim to be one of the oldest usenet service companies. They also claim to be the first commercial web-based usenet service company and, as others have gone and come, they have remained steady. Since they offer a decent amount of information, let’s examine all the available information the average user would like to know before subscribing their services.
Servers
The NNTP server is news.newsreader.com, available on the standard port 119. Other available ports are 23 (TELNET), 53 (DNS) and 443 (HTTPS). Finally, on the port 563, SSL access is supported. NNTP server connections are bandwidth limited to 10 Mbit per connection and 12 concurrent connections are available.
Retention and completion
As of April 2 2009 (latest information available), the retention for the text groups was about 500 days and for the binary groups, it was about 150 days. Regarding completion, they say that it is excellent as they carry all the articles that are posted to Usenet.
Pricing
There is only one pricing option that costs $9.95 per month with a 30 GB download cap. For NNTP server usage, only article bodies count towards user’s download cap. In other words, all header downloads are unlimited.
Access
If the user is using Web interface, there is a software limit of 10,000 articles per news group.
Download cap
The cap for new accounts is 30 GB per month. If the user reaches the 30GB cap, depending on the setting, the account will be either closed or auto-renewed. If the second option is chosen, the billing date will shift as well. The user can download as much as he or she wants and will be charged a little sooner if gone over 30 GB cap.
Misc
In April 2009, they have removed 18 groups related to child pornography in response to a request from legal authorities. Although they probably weren’t obligated to do this, they think that it was rather smart and ethical decision. Further, more than 88.000 groups are all available. The system status information and all the important announcements about the service are posted to the local newsreader.announce and newsreader.generals newsgroups.
Recommendation
The pricing is not competitive as there are number of providers offering unlimited monthly traffic for only few dollars more. Secondly, we don’t like the fact that there is only one option available. Finally, the retention is not so good, especially for the binary groups.
