Plan / Price Offerings
There are two options: block and speedcapped accounts. The block accounts are not refundable so the potential subscriber is advised to consider thoroughly which package will suit the needs. The block accounts are available with the following prices (all the accounts provide 10 connections):
- 200 GB block – $74.95
- 100 GB block – $42.95
- 30 GB block – $18.95
- 15 GB block – $11.25
- 8 GB block – $7.95
Speedcapped accounts do not restrict the number of bytes the user can download, but the speed at which the user can do so. They are available at following prices:
- 4 X 1,024 Kbps – $16.95/mo.
- 4 X 512 Kbps – $12.95/mo.
- 4 X 256 Kbps – $8.95/mo.
- 3 X 128 Kbps – $4.95/mo.
Connection Speeds / Server Locations
The connection speeds of Octanews have not been tried by us yet, but according to some reviews, they are just average.
There are number of options since there are many servers and ports available and considering the fact that, besides the standard server, they offer the standard server with SSL, dedicated posting server and dedicated posting server that supports SSL as well. The address of standard server is news.octanews.com, available on standard port 119. Further, besides this port, there are number of alternative ports available: 80, 120, 443, 8000, 8010, 8080 and 9000. The standard news server that supports SSL is available on snews.octanews.com and uses the port 563.
Dedicated posting server is available on the postnews.octanews.com and allows maximum of 2 connections. Dedicated posting server that supports SSL is available on spostnews.octanews.com, uses the port 563 and allows maximum of 2 connections as well.
Technical Notes
There isn’t much technical information aside from speed cap and prices of services.
Quality of Service
We did not test the service yet, however, according to their website the binary retention is currently 9 days and the retention rate for the text groups is 95 days. On the website, there is no information about completion rate.
Customer Service
They have a separate email address support for billing and technical issues.
Conclusion
Octanews has not updated their website since 2006 – we are not sure why it is still up but their pricing has not kept up with the times – You will do much better by choosing instead from the Best Usenet Service list on this site.
